Our Queensland Top 21

We were going to do a Queensland Top 10, which became 20, then 21! In no particular order, these are the activities, places and sights that we enjoyed most as we made our way up the east coast. We’ve even made a map with them all on …

Remember that we’re two adults travelling in a motorhome so you won’t find any playgrounds or off-road exploits in our list, and we haven’t taken pets into account either. But don’t let that put you off reading!

  1. Spending time with friends, old and new. ❤️
  2. Watching the sun set and eating fish and chips at Agnes Water.
  3. Speeding out to the Whitsundays with their amazing colours and views both above and below the water. We would certainly recommend a trip on the Thundercat.
  4. Watching the sun rise from Sandstone Park then hiking through Carnarvon Gorge looking at rock art, hopping across stepping stones and spotting wildlife.
  5. Cheering on England and Scotland at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast – and appearing on TV back at home!
  6. Bodyboarding (and camping) at Workman’s Beach.
  7. Experiencing our first rodeo at Croydon. Certainly memorable!
  8. Chatting to the owner of the Paragon Theatre in Childers and having a nose around it to get some ideas for our cinema-in-the-garage club at home.
  9. Cycling along the Turtle Way in Tannum Sands.
  10. Being patient enough to spot a platypus at Broken River.
  11. Eating scones straight out of the oven with jam and cream at the Old Station Teahouse in Cape Hillsborough NP and nosing around their display of curios.
  12. Watching the kangaroos and wallabies on the beach at sunrise at Cape Hillsborough.
  13. Spotting a koala in the wild on the Forts Walk on Magnetic Island.
  14. Cycling the Atherton Farm Roads Loop and chatting to the chairman of the local bike club who was passionate about their trails.
  15. Taking the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to Kuranda (although sadly we didn’t fall in love with Kuranda itself).
  16. Staying at Wonga Beach Caravan Park which was one of the most welcoming places we’ve found so far. And the best happy hour!
  17. Watching the possums, bandicoots and other wildlife at Bonardio RV And Nature Park.
  18. Relaxing with fellow travellers around the dinner table and eating homemade lasagne followed by sticky date pudding and ice cream at Pinnarendi Station. It wasn’t just the food that made this a memorable stay – the setup, friendly owners and amenities all deserve a mention.
  19. Discovering something totally new to us in the Undara Lava Tubes.
  20. Watching the birdlife at the excellent Cumberland Historic Chimney, Mine, Town Site and Dam free camp.
  21. Wondering at the night sky over Yeppoon beach.
